Reginald Franklin, a professor in the Department of Mass Communications, kicked off the opening session of the Southern Regional Press Institute by introducing the panel located in John F Kennedy Fine Arts building.

The panelists explained the importance of the different social networks, and how they play a big role in journalism. Steve Buttry, digital transformation editor at Digital Media First, emphasized the importance of accuracy.

“The most important question in journalism is how do you know that?” he said. “Make sure stories are connected and have all sides of it,” Renee Marsh, aviation and government regulation correspondent for CNN, said. Professional journalists and educators came to share their expertise with students for the two-day workshop.

This year’s theme focuses on the importance of social media and how it affects ethics, diversity and accuracy in journalism. For more information about the 63rd Southern Regional Press Institute visit ssusrpi.com.
